Swim team growing in Goldendale

Goldendale swimmers were in action at three meets during May and are preparing for the Oregon State championship meet.      The local swimmers compete with The Dalles swim team, but with more local members and local coaching, things could change before too long.
Nadia Smith won three free-style events in Longview, two in Hood River in addition two 50 and 100 meter backstroke races, and was third in the decathalon at The Dalles over Memorial Day weekend.      Teammate Hailey Bigbie who, like Nadia Smith, is 10 years old, qualified for her first trip to the Oregon State championship with qualifying times in the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke and 50 meter butterfly events.
Bigbie and Smith were joined by Nadia’s sisters, Jade, 8, and Thea, 5, in a 200 meter free-style relay, placing second by a fraction of a second. Jade Smith also won the 25 meter free-style and butterfly races. Thea placed third in the free-style and fifth in the butterfly.
Newcomers to the team, Rachel Disch, Ashlyn Muzechenko and Natasha Muzechenko also competed last month. Disch placed seventh in the 50 meter backstroke and eighth in the 50 meter free-style at Longview. Seven year old Ashlyn placed 12th in the 25 meter free-style and 14th in the 25 meter backstroke. Natasha, 5, was 16th in the backstroke and 17th in the free-style.
Goldendale swimmers currently practice three nights a week in Goldendale and one morning in The Dalles. Lori Hoctor is the team coach.
A swim meet for fun will be held in Goldendale on the morning of June 19. The team hosts a meet in The Dalles on June 25-27.

Six Timberwolves from 21-3 team receive SCAC honors

Six of Goldendale’s Timberwolf baseball team received post-season honors, recognizing the record-setting year that sent the team to State playoffs. The stats for league action demonstrate the pitching and hitting dominance of this year’s team. First team selections were seniors Aaron Cochran, Trevor Fields and Cody Herin. Senior Seth Davis, of Klickitat High School and freshman Lucas Denney were second team. Junior Reed Lindhe was honorable mention.
Fields, Herin and Cochran were named to play in the All-State series this weekend in Naches.

Young talent recognized on SCAC west All-league team

Goldendale’s fastpitch softball team had a losing record on the season, a reflection of a very young team. Five members of the team, including four underclassmen, were selected to the SCAC West All-league team, a reflection of the talent on the team.
Honorable mention Jessica Binns was the only senior among the Timberwolves selected in the post-season honors. First team selection went to a pair of juniors, Alex Counts and Taylor Gaston.
Johna Kartes, a sophomore who toiled behind the plate for most of the season, was tabbed for second team honors. Also getting the nod for honorable mention was sophomore Haley Hoffman.
