Trevor Fields’ pitched a complete game win in game one and set the pace in game two with a first inning grand slam home run as the Goldendale Shockers took a pair of games from Othello, Friday. The wins capped a busy week for the Shockers who also finished third in the Hood River Fourth of July tournament.
The opening game against Othello was an entertaining back and forth affair in which the Desert Sox led 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cody Herin led off with a single followed by Lucas Denney’s third double of the game. Blake Lesko took a ball off his helmet for the second time in the game to load the bases. Reed Lindhe ripped a line drive to the wall in left center for a double, giving Goldendale the lead. Fields gave up a double to open the seventh inning, but battled back in the heat, retiring the next three batters for the win.
Herin started game two and was relieved in the third inning by Austin Trunkey, leading 7-3. Othello scored in the next two innings, but a six-run outburst by the Shockers in the sixth put the game out of reach. Sox pitcher, Caleb Garza gave up three straight singles to Trunkey, Fields and Ethan Enstad, then lost command of his pitches. Wade Gaston and J.D. Moss walked and Herin was hit by a pitch to force in three runs. Denney drove in another run and Garza was replaced by Dylan Garza. Lindhe greeted the new pitcher with a two-run single before Othello ended the inning. The game finished mercifully when Moss drove in two runs in the fifth for the 15-5 victory.
The Shockers had a sterling game in the Fourth of July tournament opener against host Hood River. Fields went four innings and Trunkey mopped up the fifth for a combined 15-0 no-hitter. Goldendale had 10 hits and no errors. Denney and Lindhe each had a pair of doubles. Denney had three RBI and Lindhe and Nolin Bare each drove in two runs.
The second opponent in the eight team tournament was Union out of Vancouver and the results were much different. The Shockers made four errors and managed only four hits in an 11-3 loss, keeping them from the title game.
They were out-hit again in the third game against The Dalles Hustlers, but managed a 7-3 win for the third place trophy. Hustler pitchers had trouble with the strike zone, giving the Shockers nine free passes. Fields, Moss and Bare teamed to hold The Dalles to six hits in the game.
The Shockers played Milton-Freewater in a pair of double headers, at Milton-Freewater on July 7 and in Goldendale on July 8. Each club held home advantage in four close games. Milton-Freewater won 11-9 and 8-5 and Goldendale won 4-3 and 7-6.
The hero for game one in Goldendale was Tyrell Cronin. Goldendale trailed 3-0 in the sixth inning. Denney drove Herin home for a run and Lesko reached by error and Lindhe by single. Cronin cracked a single that cleared the bases with two out and Herin held the visitors scoreless in the seventh for the win.
The second game was an 11 inning affair, ending on a wild play described by Coach Ann Cochran as “comical.” Aaron Cochran tied the game in the ninth inning with his second home run of the game, stifling the enthusiasm of Milton-Freewater who made the score 6-5 in the top of the inning. Cochran walked in the 11th and took second when a pick-off attempt was missed by the first baseman. Cochran continued to third when the first baseman made a bad throw to second. Coach Dohrman called for a suicide squeeze on the next pitch to Fields, but the pitch was more like a pitch-out and Fields couldn’t make contact, leaving Cochran in no man’s land. However, the catcher’s throw to third sailed into left field and Cochran trotted home with the game winner. Lesko pitched a strong five innings for Goldendale with Fields getting the win for the final three innings.
The Shockers played Prosser on Tuesday and are in Beaverton over the weekend for the North Oregon State Babe Ruth championships.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) offices, like those of most other state agencies, will have temporary employee layoffs that will affect offices, but keeps wildlife areas and water access sites open. The first of the layoffs was last Monday. Nine more unpaid dates are planned.
Fishing and hunting license sales conducted over the Internet at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ and at retail vendors will not be affected by the closure. WDFW hatcheries will not be open to the public during the layoff.
WDFW enforcement officers are exempt from the layoffs, under the law adopted by the Legislature. WDFW also has exempted fish counters who distinguish various species of salmon as they move past Columbia River hydropower dams. The federally required and federally funded fish counting must be conducted consistently while salmon are returning upriver.
Some WDFW employees who feed animals or perform other tasks that are critical to resource management will take alternate temporary layoff days.
The next four layoff days are Aug. 6, Sept. 7, Oct. 11 and Dec. 27. More information about statewide closures is available at www.ofm.wa.gov/layoff/default.asp.
