Shockers complete perfect record on improved home field

Prior to this spring’s high school baseball season, players and coaches invested their labor to improve Goldendale’s baseball field, tearing out the basepath grass and adding soil and amendments that produced a smooth, quick infield that was capable of taking in spring rains without becoming unplayable. How much of a factor that was, who knows, but the Timberwolves and the Babe Ruth Shockers posted a perfect 18-0 on the refurbished field.
The latest and final victim was Prosser in a 12-9 and 17-11 double-header on July 13. The two teams combined for 51 hits, with no pitcher lasting more than four innings for either side.
Prosser jumped on top 6-0 in the opener, only to fall behind after a seven run third inning by Goldendale. Both teams played errorless ball and the Shockers turned four double plays. Lucas Denney, Aaron Cochran and Nolin Bare homered for Goldendale. Bare got the win and Austin Trunkey pitched the final three innings for the save.
Defense fell by the wayside in game two as Prosser was tagged with four errors and Goldendale three. The game turned in the third inning when the Shockers broke a 6-6 tie with a five-run outburst. Cody Herin homered and had four RBI. Cochran, Trunkey, Ethan Enstad and Wade Gaston each had two RBI.
North Oregon
Championship
The Shockers opened play in the North Oregon Babe Ruth Championship against one of the favored teams, Mound Time. Trevor Fields went the distance allowing just two hits, but walks and errors led to four runs which were enough as Goldendale scored three off five hits.
Goldendale fought off elimination in the next two games, defeating Tigard 13-1 with Reed Lindhe on the mound, relieved by Herin, and 15-5 over Milton-Freewater. Linde’s first inning grand slam home run helped Fields with his second complete game against Milton-Freewater. Denney also homered and had two hits, as did Herin, Blake Lesko and J.D. Moss.
The Shockers’ season came to an end with a 9-2 loss to an all-star team, AIM. The Shockers were held to two hits and committed five errors in the loss. The team’s overall record was 16-7.
Fiesta time at golf course
It was couples time at the Goldendale Golf Course for the Mexican Fiesta Couples Tournament. Teams competed in groups of similar handicaps and awards presented based on gross and net scores.
Winning flight one gross score was the team of Tim and Joan Pifher, of The Dalles. Second place went to Jay Thacker and Sandy Bell. Flight two winners were Adam and Tia Black, finishing ahead of Ed and Patsy Prideaux, of Hood River.
Net winners were Jonas and Bernie Keys in flight one and Chad and Denise Ross in flight two. Runners up were Bill and Sheila Beyerlin and Tim and Neats Furlong for flights one and two, respectively.
