Venema clears 12 feet and two Cougars win at Boardman meet

Six more first place medals were added to Nadia Smith’s collection following the Jay Rowan Invitational swim meet at Redmond Ore., July 16-18. Smith set new personal records in all but one event, winning the 50 and 400 meter freestyle, 100 and 200 meter intermediate medley, and 50 and 100 butterfly. She was nearly a minute and a half faster in the 400 free style and knocked 20 seconds off her 100 meter medley. Smith was also second in the 50 meter backstroke and 100 meter breaststroke. Smith takes a big step up by competing in a sectional meet this week in California. Smith, an accomplished 10 year old swimmer, met the qualifying standards for sectional meets in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and the 200 intermediate medley.
Eight-year-old Jade Smith improved on times in most of her races, placing fifth in the 100 meter intermediate medley, and sixth in the 25 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle, and 25 meter breaststroke. She was seventh in the 50 meter backstroke, eighth in the 50 meter freestyle and 10th in the 200 meter intermediate medley.
The youngest of the Goldendale members of The Dalles swimming team, five-year-old Thea Smith was seventh in the 25 meter freestyle and breaststroke events. She also placed in the 25 and 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter freestyle.
Alyssa Merry competed in the 50 meter breaststroke and 50 meter freestyle events placing ninth and 16th respectively.
Rachel Disch swam in the 50 meter breaststroke and freestyle plus the 100 meter intermediate medley, while Holly Disch competed in the 50 meter freestyle.
Telford and Lorton win at Goldendale Golf Course
Goldendale Golf Course was the site for the home and home series, hosting Mt. Adams and Black Rock Creek clubs over the weekend. Each team plays against its own club players. The winning gross score was 73 by Roger Telford. Telford edged Zach Wanderscheid by one stroke. Third place went to Jonas Keys with a 77.
The top net score was a 64 by Frank Lorton. Second was 65 by Dick Lobb and third was 67 for Bill Campbell. Long drive winner was Wanderscheid and Jeff Fields was closest to the pin. Next stop on the series is Black Rock Creek, Aug. 8.
