Lexi Cameron spun a time of 9.434 in the first round of goat tying at the National High School Rodeo in Gillette, Wy., on July 20, good enough for 17th place out of 159 competitors. It was also enough to make it into the second round of competition. Her next run was a bit slower with a time of 11.312 which left the Centerville cowgirl in 27th overall for the event.
Cameron was the only member of the Goldendale High School rodeo team to make it to the second round of competition. Other results were Gavin Cooper, 52nd in bareback riding, and Kane Thiele 57th in team roping with partner Ky Barry, of Yelm.
Washington girls placed sixth as a team and the boys were 32nd. The winning girls team was from Utah and the winning boys and overall winning team was from Texas.
Winning streak halted at State for Bree Wanderscheid

The Wanderscheid name has become synonymous with winning golf and although Zach Wanderscheid is about to take his game to Idaho, Bree Wanderscheid showed she, too knows how to win.
Bree didn’t just pop up on the radar, she has been good for her age for a long time. This year she moves to take on some stiffer competition at the high school level. The 14 year old Goldendale golfer competed in Washington Junior Golf this summer with outstanding results.
There were four district tournaments this summer and Wanderscheid posted four wins. She started with a five-stroke victory at Columbia Point on June 15. Two six-stroke run-aways followed on June 23 at Canyon Lakes and June 28 at Wine Valley. The final nine-hole meet was July 6 at Highlander where Wanderscheid shot an 81 for a first place tie.
Two weeks ago Wanderscheid won the District IV state qualifier shooting a 77 and 76 in the two rounds to win by nine strokes.
Wanderscheid competed at the State championship for junior golfers on July 28-30 in Lynnwood. Her first round score was 77 which put Wanderscheid in 10th place. She moved up to eighth after the second round, but the 81 left her 14 strokes back and out of the running for the final round.
Nadia Smith competes in California sectional swim meet
Nadia Smith swam personal record times in two races at Concord, Calif., last week, but wasn’t able to make her way into the finals. Smith qualified for the meet in four events, her first taste of big-time competition at a sectional meet.
Smith’s first race was the 100 meter freestyle where she slashed a second off her best time and placed 19th. She did even better in the 200 intermediate medley, a full two seconds faster than her qualifying time, but it was also short of making the finals. Her time in the 200 meter freestyle placed her 30th and she was .8 seconds short of making it in the 50 meter freestyle.
Smith is 10 years old and competes as a member of The Dalles swim club.
