KPUD project gets sudden notice

WATER RIGHTS: The Klickitat PUD energy plan would use its water rights at the former Goldendale aluminum plant to generate new energy.

A Klickitat PUD plan to create a $2.5 billion project had been flying under press radar until it broke wide last week when it was highlighted in a press release from a source unrelated to the PUD.

“I’d just as soon it was kept quiet until it was actually ready to happen,” said PUD commissioner Randy Knowles yesterday. “But it was in a press release from Sen. [Jim] Honeyford’s office, and suddenly media were calling us about it.”

Honeyford was co-sponsor of a new energy bill easily passed by the Legislature and sent to the governor for signature. In it, a provision was made that for the first time enables the PUD to actually act on the project in question, which is a plan to us...
