State Grange to hold quilt block contest, cash prizes offered

Glenwood News

Sympathy is extended to Helen Blair and family due to the recent loss of their husband, father and grandfather, Lester Blair. After a memorial service in White Salmon on March 24, Les was laid to rest at the Glenwood Cemetery. The Glenwood Women’s Club served a memorial dinner in Mr. Blair’s honor as well. Les’ quick wit and friendliness will be missed by those who knew him!

The date for the monthly sewing/craft day at the Glenwood Grange hall has been changed to the first Wednesday of each month. The program is sponsored by Glenwood Grange 94 Family Living Program as a means for community women to work on quilts or other projects; and to enjoy a social opportunity. Participants meet at 9 a.m. and bring a sack lunch or coordinate a potluck lunch. A small donation is requested to help cover the cost of utilities for the day.

The Glenwood Grange Family Living Program is designed to encourage activities that will result in better living at the local, state, national and international levels. To that end, the Grange is continuing to collect used eyeglasses, aluminum can tabs and canceled postage stamps to be donated to a variety of programs.

A Washington State Grange quilt block contest is underway for all ages. Grange membership is not a requirement for this challenge. Entry blocks are to be constructed in a “patchwork pattern” theme of your choice using only three colors: pink, purple and yellow. The blocks must be 12.5 inches square; and will be judged at the State Grange convention in June. There is a $15 cash prize for first place; $12 for second place and $9 for third place. This contest will give you a good opportunity to dig through your fabric stash; and to show off your sewing skills as you piece your favorite block. For more information on any of the Grange activities, please contact Mary Pierce, Family Living Director, at 364-3344.

Coming Events:

April 2-6: Glenwood School spring vacation.

April 17: Ballots are due for the 2013 and 2014 Glenwood School levies.
