Stripe rust off to a slow start in eastern Washington wheat

Early indications are that stripe rust may not develop to the extent that was experienced in southeastern Washington in 2011. According to Washington State University plant pathologist, Xianming Chen, occurrence of the disease is lower than at this date last year.

Chen and colleagues survey commercial and experimental fields during the year, rating the presence and severity of the disease to help growers with management decisions. Stripe rust caused severe losses in terms of yield and treatment costs across much of the state last year, including Klickitat County.
