Bike course at Goldendale helps get kids to and from school safely

RULES OF THE ROAD: GMS students were out practicing their riding skills earlier this week. The bikes and helmets were purchased by the school through a grant.

Ensuring safe passage to and from school is the goal of a new bicycle curriculum at Goldendale Middle School. Grant funds allowed Goldendale to send four faculty members from the middle and high schools to training for the Safe Routes to School program, which is designed to teach children skills to walk or ride a bicycle safely. The course includes classroom time on relevant vocabulary and rules of the road plus bicycle riding practice.

The grant of more than $21,000 funded the purchase of 30, seven-speed bicycles, helmets and a transportation and storage trailer with assistance from the Bicycle Alliance of Washington. Faculty members Jay Thacker, Jennifer Holycross, Lance Den Boer and G...
