Treat marijuana as a health issue

 


To the Editor:

I am responding to a letter written about I-502 by Joy Collins on April 25. I was very sad to read about the death of Joy’s son. I, too, am a Mom, and I do believe that Joy and I share a common goal to save lives. When we have heart problems, we see a doctor but when someone has a drug problem, we send the police. It’s the wrong approach because it doesn’t work.

Marijuana use should be treated as a public health issue, not as a crime. Marijuana alone doesn’t lead to hard drugs but the cartels who sell it do lead people to hard drugs to expand their business. And we empower them by giving them the marijuana market to manage. It’s like giving the alcohol market to A...
