Cheerleaders get a leg up on school sports season

ELEVATE: Cheerleaders are asked to give their all at the end of an energetic morning session during cheer camp in Goldendale.

High school cheerleaders from Goldendale and Trout Lake-Glenwood were working hard at their craft last week in the Goldendale gym. Schools choose whether cheerleading is a sport or an activity, but one thing is true whatever you call it, cheerleading is an athletic endeavor. It takes strength, coordination and training to be a cheerleader and like most sports, there are camps to help participants sharpen their skills and learn new moves.

There were 15 girls from Goldendale and seven from TLG at the camp, according to cheer coach at Goldendale, Kathy Krall. And yes, Krall is a coach meeting the same coaching standards that all coaches must meet whether it is a sport or activity, according...
