25 Years Ago – September 24, 1987

• A suspected series of cattle mutilation crimes in the Satus Pass area was solved Sept. 16 when officers of the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office converged on the alleged perpetrators who used the reproductive organs of bulls to bait bears. Lt. Rick McComas, of the KCSO, identified the men as Yakima residents from Outlook “who own a large cattle feed lot and used their own animals, which died through natural causes, for bear bait.”

The case began July 29 when the sheriff’s office received a call from the Pine Springs area off of Schuster Rd near Satus Pass. A resident located a 200-300 lb. bull calf that had its front legs and hind legs tied...
