Student lands among top 10 nationwide in writing contest

 


Will White is one in 12,000.

The 14-year-old Goldendale ninth grader’s writing skills were so good they landed him among only 10 winning students across the country out of 12,000 entries in an essay contest sponsored by mapmaker Rand McNally.

“We had to write between 400 and 600 words about a special place in the United States that you have a personal connection with,” White says.

So he did. He wrote a rhapsodic ode to a hiking trail back in Waimea, on the big island of Hawaii, from when he and his family lived there, before his father—John White, CEO of Klickitat Valley Health—accepted his position in Goldendale.

“It’s a really cool place,” White says of the Waimea trail....
