Beer spill kills 9; first sound in films

Oct. 17: 1091 –A violent tornado rips through London. It is believed it was a T8/F4 on the Fujitsi scale which is interesting as the scale was formulated until around 1973. 1814 – Also in London, many are treated to a free beer when vats at the LeMeux and Company Brewery burst and spill 323,000 imperial gallons of brew onto Tottenham Court Road in the London Beer Flood. Two houses are knocked over and nine die. 1931 – Al Capone does not get to Pass Go or Collect $200 but goes directly to jail after his conviction for income tax evasion. Born: Gary Puckett (1942).
