January:

Jan. 1—New York City lowers the lit glass ball for the first time (1908). Y2K doesn’t happen (2000). Tell your friends and family that “Auld Lang Syne” is old Scottish for “Old Long Ago.” (2013)

Jan. 12—First recorded use of the use of playing cards attached to bicycle wheel spokes (1936).

Jan. 25—Parker Brothers stock falls after the introduction of its new board game “Monotony.”

Jan. 30—Lumberjack Renee Boudreaux obtains the rare talent of being able to see both the forest and the trees.

February:

Feb. 1—Tennessee Ernie Ford discovers that if he loads 16 tons, he gets another day older and deeper in debt (1965).

Feb. 8—The first ongoing filibuster...
