Wilkins medals in first trip to state

INCHES FROM A HIGHER FINISH: Kyle Wilkins spent several seconds trying to pin Anthony Louthan’s shoulders to the mat in his second match on Saturday. A pin would have sent Wilkins into a final match for third or fourth places.

Kyle Wilkins made his way through the first day of the 25th Mat Classic with a 2-0 record, assuring himself of a top six finish in the 170 pound division. The junior battled to improve his position in the second day of wrestling in the Tacoma Dome, but had to settle for sixth place, a worthy accomplishment in his first trip to State.

Wilkins’ Goldendale teammates Dean Enstad and Zach Cully didn’t fare as well, losing their Saturday matches. Cully was pinned by Wyatt Gustafson, of Eatonville in 38 seconds and had his State run ended by Teigan Glidewell, of Freeman who also won by pin.

Enstad never did get on track in his opener and lost to Elma’s Tyson Dick 11-2. In his second match...
