GHS student art on display in Yakima gallery

AN ELUSIVE MUSTACHE: Skyler Gray’s drawing titled “Now You See It, Now You Dont,” was one of five entries made by the Goldendale arts program in this year’s Regional High School Art Show.

Always one of the crowd-pleasing events on the south central Washington arts calendar, the ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show celebrates its 40th year this month with its annual showcase of the best creative work by high school students from throughout the area.

The 2013 exhibit of paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, and jewelry officially opened on March 10, and runs through Saturday, March 30. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The opening reception for this year’s show took place on March 10, at Allied Arts of Yakima Valley in the facility’s Peggy Lewis Gallery. Awards were presented to seven students whose work will advance to OSPI’s statewide Superintendent’s High School Art Show, which will be displayed at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia during April 3 through May 30.

The 2013 ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show includes 123 works by 114 students of 22 teachers from 17 regional high schools. The high schools represented this year include: Davis (Yakima School District), Eisenhower (Yakima School District), East Valley, Ellensburg, Goldendale, Grandview, Granger, Hope Academy (Naches Valley School District), La Salle, Naches, Riverside Christian, Royal, Selah, Sunnyside, Toppenish, West Valley, and White Swan. Judges for this year’s regional show included Steve Grafe, curator of art at Maryhill Museum of Art.

Additionally, up to two of the local pieces not advancing to the OSPI show will receive the “ESD 105 Board Choice Award” and will be purchased by the ESD 105 Board of Directors for permanent display as part of the ESD 105 student art collection inside the ESD 105 Conference Center at Yakima.

The artists selected for display from Goldendale were Skyler Gray, Ethan King, Madeline Wallis, Faith Jackowski, and Andrew Altenburger.

The annual regional art show is sponsored by ESD 105, Allied Arts of Yakima Valley, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction as a means to support arts education and provide a venue for student artists to showcase their works.

Images of the regional show will be available for viewing soon at the ESD 105 ArtFusion Web site (
