State Parks system nervously celebrates its centennial

 


Washington State’s Park system, three years older than the federal park system, had a splashy public 100th birthday party March 19 in Olympia. Cake was cut, and speeches and lofty undertakings were made by dignitaries promising to not only restore the centennial park system to its prime, but to increase the number of parks, to improve and upgrade the types of services offered to its users. Soon after the celebratory media event was over, the combination of paid and volunteer Parks’ Commission members reconvened back to their regular meeting and continued discussing the forsaken system’s “transformational” planning needs—read, find the money to do the work, then take the parks...
