4-H Horse camp offers learning opportunity to young riders

Spring Break: Fourteen riders and three clinicians spent spring break learning horsemanship skills. Amid wind and scattered showers, success was achieved at the 2013 4-H Spring Break Horse Camp held at the Klickitat County Fairgrounds Joan Frey indoor arena.

The clinic started with a green horse and/or retraining program on Friday that introduced children and horses to various skills such as lunging that can be used to gain a horse’s attention and trust. The clinic continued with horsemanship, showmanship, trail, IHOR (In-hand obstacle race) and western games on Saturday and Sunday.

Clinicians Jackie Miller, Paige Wells and George Thomsen helped the young horses and young riders achieve a feeling of real success. The 14 4-H members all worked on their skills and learned several...
