Golf team continues win streak

Goldendale’s golf team is beginning to heat up. It’s hard not to look at the scores Bree Wanderscheid is putting up on the girls’ side of play, but it is the boys’ team that has also been pretty competitive lately. After defeating Warden and Highland on April 11, the boys defeated Zillah and Royal on the home course last week. They were back in action on Friday in Hermiston and walked off with a win over Enterprise and Heppner behind Joel Gerchak and Justin Fields, each shooting an 82.

Goldendale sent eight golfers to the boys’ only event. Joining Gerchak and Fields in the team score were Mitch Anderson at 86 and Miller White at 101. The team score of 351 was 17 strokes better than the Enterprise team. Heppner was third, just a stroke behind Enterprise. Other boys who competed for Goldendale were: Bryce Wilkins 117, Nathaniel Hill 107, Connor Abbott 129, and Levi Pittman 129.

The girls competed against a tough field in Yakima at SunTides Golf Course on April 18. Wanderscheid’s 74 was good enough to win the tournament by six strokes and lead Goldendale to a second place team finish. Other scores for the Lady Wolves were Sawyer Ross, who shot a personal best 94, Natalie Hurst at 109 and Leah Lewis, also a best at 123.

The win for Wanderscheid was on the heels of her junior golf win at the Central Washington Junior Open golf tournament, held in Kennewick. Wanderscheid shot rounds of 83 and 75 to win by seven strokes.

Goldendale golfers will compete in Pendleton on Friday and travel to Cle Elum on Monday. A second meet in Goldendale is scheduled against La Salle and Naches Valley on May 6. District championships are May 15.
