Javelin throwers' have heyday in White Salmon

There was something in the air last Friday as personal records (PR) fell like rain in the javelin. The prime spot for throwers had to be White Salmon, although a couple of throwers from Bickleton also had success at Kittitas.

The boys from the Greater Columbia Gorge League dominated the event over a strong field of mostly 1A schools in the Bruin Invitational at White Salmon. Jacob Ziegler, of Lyle-Wishram stunned the group by throwing more than 11 feet beyond his previous best to win the javelin with a throw of 146-feet, 4-inches. Its significance was magnified by the fact he edged TLG’s J.D. Yarnell, who has been in command of the event. Yarnell didn’t have a bad day, however, as he also set a PR with a toss of 146-feet for second place. The throws elevated Ziegler and Yarnell to sixth and seventh best in the state among 1B throwers for 2013.

But, they weren’t the only ones with big throws for Lyle-Wishram. Gabe Montoya (127-3), Gavin Nelson (123-11), Maelynn Luke (99-3) and Ellie Smith (77-5) each set PRs in the event. TLG also had PR throws from Dalton Jones (104-3), Micah Melkonian (101-6). Klickitat’s Julianna Quinton had a PR 84-2 in the javelin and Mitchell Sanchey also had a PR in his first action of the year with a throw of 114-9.

The Bickleton throwers who set new PRs in the javelin were first time thrower Joey Cardenas (87-4) and Colt Hansen (93-9).

It was the sprinters from Goldendale who dominated the meet at Highland, last week. Isaac Messenger jumped to the top of the SCAC performance board with a blistering time of 11.34 in the 100 meters. He also set a PR in the 200 meters with a sprint sweep in 23.23.

Billie Jo Risheim was a double winner in the 100 and 200 meter races. She set a PR of 13.54 in the 100 and ran a 28.74 in the 200 meters. Also having PR runs in the 100 meters were Zoey Jagelski (14.04) and Katelyn McGraw (14.14).

Freshman Brian Golding had a monster meet, crushing his pole vault PR by a foot at 10-feet. He also won the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles.
