Pacific Tent Caterpillar outbreaks reported in county

 


Pacific Tent Caterpillar populations have been on the rise and are now out-breaking in some locations in Skamania and Klickitat Counties.

Pacific Tent Caterpillars generally enjoy feeding on oak leaves. When food becomes scarce, caterpillars will wander around looking for other food and may take bites out of other plants in yards and gardens. Other tent caterpillars such as the Western Tent Caterpillar are also increasing in populations.

Tent caterpillars are black and blue with tufts of orange hairs. Caterpillars form webs along branches and construct communal tents. Large populations of caterpillars can completely cover even a large tree with silk webs. As the caterpillars grow, so do t...
