DNR reminds about summer fire dangers

 


The Washington State Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Fire Prevention Team was in Klickitat County last week to help educate people about how to prevent wildfires.

The main point the team wants to get out to the public is that people have to be held—and hold themselves—personally accountable for the fires that they start.

Last year there were 794 wildfires that burned on state protected lands and burned 68,347 acres, costing tax payers more than $48 million to suppress those fires, the team reported. Of those fires, 80 percent were caused by humans. Humans are the leading cause of wildfires, whether they are careless about disposing of their cigarettes or if they have a faulty...
