Fire near Satus Pass closes US 97
A forest fire on US 97 near the top of Satus Pass within the Yakama Indian Reservation has jumped the highway, according to a report from the Washington State Department of Transporation (WSDOT). There is no indication presently which way the fire jumped. US 97 is now closed between Goldendale and Toppenish. Flames and smoke are causing hazardous driving conditions.
Klickitat County Emergency Management Director Ed Powell said at about 4:15 p.m. that Klickitat County firefighters had not been asked onto the reservation to assist as of that time, though Rural 7 crews were preparing to aid if called.
WSDOT says drivers should use alternate routes and expect delays.
