Throop, Huffsmith Homecoming royalty Rodeo association annual meeting Sunday

Glenwood News

Glenwood School students and staff celebrated Homecoming last week. Students dressed for various themes; participated in spirit assembly activities; and decorated the school halls. Jaecee Hoctor crowned King Jonathan Throop; while 2013 Queen Dakota Jones crowned Tamaira Huffsmith as this year’s homecoming queen during half time of Thursday’s game against Lyle. Their royal court consisted of princesses Kaylee Feller, Reyauna Guzman, Marisela Hernandez and Princes Greg Dechand, Kenny Henderson and Richard Slawson. A very impressive bonfire was lit, per tradition, following Thursday’s game! The homecoming dance following Friday night’s game with Sunnyside brought the week’s activities to an end.

Following an 18-year record-dry October, December closed out 2013 with a similar designation. Doug Daniels reported that only 2.41 inches of precipitation fell in Glenwood last month. The next most-dry Decembers were 1997 and 2000 in which 3.0 inches fell respectively. The wettest December during the past 18 years was in 1998 when Glenwood had 48.3 inches of moisture. Doug reported that the average December precipitation for that period is 31.91 inches.

The Glenwood Honor Society hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive on Jan. 8. Our community responded with a good turnout for the event; and an impressive group of students volunteered to help during the blood drive. The Red Cross reports that each blood donation can help up to three recipients! Thank you to everyone who donated or tried to donate blood and to each of the volunteers who made the drive a success.

Congratulations to Roxie Clemmer, Steve Hoodenpyl and Travis Miller on achieving noteworthy birthdays this week! Best wishes to each of you for many more happy birthdays!

The Glenwood Rodeo Association will hold their annual meeting on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. in the dance hall. The agenda includes election of officers and directors; and coronation of incoming Queen Becky Windom by retiring Queen Mariah Nilson. Queen Becky will be holding a silent auction as well. New members are always welcome!
