Gleaners to hold fund raiser to help transport food donations

On Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Goldendale Gleaners will be putting on a garage sale to help raise funds for their organization. They will also be accepting donations that can be dropped off and picked up on April 3. The Gleaners will be using the money raised to field costs for traveling to and obtaining produce that they provide to people in need and donate to food banks in Bingen and Goldendale.

The Goldendale Gleaners are a nonprofit organization that is one of the Washington Gorge Action Programs. They work to collect foods that are not used in the stores, but are good to eat. In the United States 31 percent of produce is wasted according to the USDA. By getting permission to pick orchards that haven’t been used for that year or getting produce that wasn’t sent to the stores the Gleaners utilize food that would be otherwise wasted.

After obtaining the produce they donate the food to local food banks and provide it to people of low income or who are in need. The Gleaners also give food to New Hope Farms, the senior center, and the soup kitchen to name a few. “We’re here to help the community and we utilize food that would otherwise go to waste. We provide nutrition for people in need,” says Rody Schilling of the Goldendale Gleaners.

The garage sale fundraiser will take place at Father’s House Fellowship 207 S Klickitat Ave Goldendale, WA 98620. To make a donation on April 3, call (509) 773-4967. Applications will be available for those who are interested in joining the organization.
