Cattleman of the Year not the typical Klickitat County ranch

CATTLEMAN'S FIELD DAY: A good crowd enjoyed a tour of unusual livestock at Saturday's Klickitat County Cattleman's field day. Schreiner Farms was selected as Cattlemen of the Year and hosts of the annual field day. A tot and animal enjoyed each other's presence.

The invitation to the annual Klickitat County Livestock Growers field day read, "Schreiner Farms is not your traditional cattle operation. You are in for a special behind the gate tour with their exotic animals from A to Z."

Special is an understatement for the nearly 200 attendees who included ranch families as well as the general public. Guests encountered exotic animals, including zebras, camel, giraffe, buffalo, wallaroos, ostrich, and reindeer; along with the Red Angus cattle raised at Schreiner Farm. Co-owner, John Schreiner enthusiastically introduced his favorite animals to the attendees by name, birth story and colorful character traits. Calypso and Candy, two of the Bactrian (...

The Cattlemen of the Year for 1976 and 1977 are missing from the list. The recipient of the award in 1977 was Wayne Eshelman.

Nice story about a ranch that is a little different but intriguing and visible to many. As a Klickitat Co. native now removed to W. Washington, I appreciate seeing the list of past Cattleman of the Year recipients---so many names that remind me of the hard working people of my homeland.
