Cougar football is back

NEW COACH FOR RETURNING TEAM: Antoine Montoya talks to his team during a break in practice last week. Montoya has experience as a player and was formerly an assistant coach under Don Smith. The Cougars did not field a team in 2012 or 2013.

After a two year hiatus, high school football is back at Lyle-Wishram. The Cougars will be on the field in Dufur, this Saturday at 10 a.m., playing in the Dufur Classic against Hosanna Christian.

The last time Lyle-Wishram put a team on the field was in 2011 as an eight-man football team. The schools believed their numbers were marginal for fielding a team in 2012 and no team was formed that year or in 2013. A number of players played for the Columbia-White Salmon Bruins for the past two years. Several were key to the Bruins' offensive and defensive lines and John Stevens was a featured running back.
