County sounds rabies alert

 


The Klickitat County Health Department submitted a bat to be tested for rabies that was recently found at a local residence. That bat tested positive for rabies.

Rabies is a severe viral disease that affects the central nervous system; it is almost always fatal if untreated. All warm-blooded mammals including humans are susceptible to rabies.

The primary source of rabies in the Northwest is bats, with rabid bats being found in almost every county in Washington. Bats tested for rabies are more likely to test positive for rabies because they tend to be sick and injured, however less than 1-percent of all bats in the wild are infected with rabies.
