October 25, 2014

Pearl Hodgson West, 92, passed away October 25, 2014, at Parkview at Wheatland Village in Walla Walla, Washington. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church, 715 SE 12th Street, College Place, Washington. Pastor Ed Gienger will officiate.

Pearl was born to Christopher and Sarah Elizabeth Hodgson in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on May 31, 1922. She married Kenneth Adrian West on January 10, 1952 in Goldendale, Washington. Pearl pursued several career paths throughout her life: Teacher, Junior Evangelist and Registered Nurse, having graduated from Portland Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She later worked with her husband in their Farmer's Insurance business as a secretary. They lived in the Yakima Valley until 1991, when they retired. They moved to the Walla Walla area where they lived for twenty-three years. This allowed them to be near their girls and grandchildren.

Pearl was a devoted Christian, as well as wife, mother and homemaker. She shared her love of nature through her beautiful rose gardens. She enjoyed reading stories to her children and grandchildren, as well as collecting stamps, rocks, shells, butterflies, and feathers, to earn her Missionary Volunteer Honor Badges. She made a collection of dolls that she displayed proudly. Pearl also spent hours crocheting beautiful doilies and table cloths, along with embroidering on pillowcases. She very much enjoyed assembling puzzles with family and others. You could always count on seeing her reading her Bible and lesson every day. Visitors could count on receiving a Hershey's Kiss or candy before departing her home. She was the "Guardian" of her neighborhood, as she observed the coming and going of those around her. Pearl will be missed.

Pearl is survived by her two daughters, Rhonda Erbenich and Carmel Bechtel; two sons-in-law, Alfred Erbenich and Marlin Bechtel, four grandchildren, Melissa, Matthew, Kevin and Ammy; six great-grandchildren, Cole, Hailey, Dylan, Taya, Kyle and Kody; eight nieces and nephews.

Pearl is preceded in death by her mother and father; brother, Albert Hodgson; sister, Ruth Bodrug; a stillborn son; and husband, Kenneth West.

Memorial contributions may be made to Adventist Word Radio (AWR) through Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 The Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, Washington 99362. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guestbook and share stories about Pearl at http://www.mountainview-colonialdewitt.com.
