COUPLE OF KINZIES: Klickitat's Mackenzie Tuthill drives on Trout Lake's Mckinzie Wurtz at Klickitat. The girls were the leading scorers for their respective teams.

Two wins on the week gave Lyle-Wishram's Lady Cougars a leg up in the Gorge League standings, but a loss to Bickleton announced the battle that is brewing for second place. Sunnyside Christian continued to roll along with easy wins over Yakama Nation and Trout Lake, remaining undefeated at 8-0. They took on Bickleton on Tuesday while Lyle-Wishram traveled for an important game at Trout Lake.

The Cougars started the week with a 58-31 win at Klickitat. Four Cougars scored double-digits led by Lacy Carse's 17 points. Carse had a couple of missed threes before she found her mark and landed a string of long range shots. Kiya Childers had 16 points, Maelynn Luke scored 11 and Ellie Smith hit for 10. Klickitat was led by Mackenzie Tuthill's 16 points and Bailee Green's 14 rebounds.

The Cougars looked to be on a roll through the first quarter of a key home game against Bickleton. The Cougs jumped on top 15-4, but they could not finish and lost 50-44. Lyle-Wishram led as late as 44-40, but Bickleton used their rebounding advantage and a press to control the game and score the final 10 points. Freshman Ashley Magana led the Pirates with 12 points and was joined in double digits by Lindsay Brown and Hannah Pond, each with 10 points. Luke was the leading scorer for the Cougars with 18 points. Lyle-Wishram had 13 steals in the game, but were out-rebounded 44-16.

The next night was another bombardment by Carse who poured in 28 points against Yakama Nation in a 51-42 win. Alex Cloud shut down Athena Wapsheli, holding the high scoring guard to just seven points. Ellie Smith had 15 rebounds and Luke had eight assists for Lyle-Wishram.

Trout Lake kept themselves in the competition for a playoff berth with a win over Klickitat 45-22. Mckinzie Wurtz scored 21 points for Trout Lake and Beyyine Ozkan contributed 12 to the winning cause. Mackenzie Tuthill led Klickitat with 10 points.

Lyle-Wishram finishes the regular season with the Sunnyside Christian challenge on Saturday. They will play one more non-league game at Klickitat on Monday.

Bickleton has the opportunity to tie or go ahead of Lyle-Wishram, depending on the outcome of Tuesday's games. The Lady Pirates host winless Klickitat on Friday at 6 p.m. and try for the sweep of Trout Lake on Saturday. Bickleton and Lyle-Wishram were even in the loss column heading into Tuesday's games.

Yakama Nation and Trout Lake tangle twice in the next week with the Mustangs probably looking for a sweep to dislodge the Eagles from fourth place. The first game will be on Friday and the second is a rescheduled game for next Tuesday. The Eagles will play at Klickitat on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. in what will be the Vandals' homecoming event.
