STEPPING DOWN: Doug Siegel, a 37-year institution at Goldendale High School, is hanging up his baton.

Local middle and high school band teacher Doug Siegel will be saying goodbye to the Goldendale School District at the end of the year as he retires from his teaching career of 37 years. After leaving his mark on the Goldendale band program, his teaching and musical talents will be greatly missed.

"I came to Goldendale from Twisp, in North Central Washington," says Siegel. "One thing that made me fall in love with Goldendale, other than the beautiful countryside, was Main Street and how it reminded me of my hometown. That's sort of the reason why I wound up here," he says.

Siegel's career as a music teacher began in Neah Bay, at the Makah Indian reservation. "I started teaching at Neah Bay...
