Monday marks 35 years since Mt. St. Helens erupted. The Sentinel story on May 22 focused on ash clean up around Goldendale. The "yucky stuff," as the story called it, continued in the area for weeks as the volcano's cloud rose some 15 miles into the air, spreading ash over 11 states. An earlier Sentinel story covered the slow plumes of ash that arose before the major eruption, warning, "St. Helens loses its stately calm."
