County issues notices on whooping cough

Pertussis seen on large scale in state, five in county

 


The Klickitat County Health Department (KCHD) along with local health providers and hospitals are working to combat a state-wide rise in pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Whooping cough is a highly contagious, serious respiratory disease, passed from person to person by coughing or sneezing.

So far this year there have been a total of 755 cases reported statewide, compared to 137 reported cases at this same time last year. There have been five confirmed cases already in Klickitat County, with many more being treated every day. In 2012, Washington was hit with an epidemic, with nearly 5,000 cases by the end of the year. Dozens of people were hospitalized and one infant died.
