White Horse Vale Lipizzans at Home, Garden & Sportsman's Show

HORSES TO GO: Lipizzans used for trail riding will be featured at this year's Home, Garden and Sportsman's Show.

White Horse Vale Lipizzans in Goldendale have bred and shown Lipizzans for over 20 years, but you won't see formally dressed riders in English saddles atop these dazzling high-stepping horses at the upcoming Home, Garden & Sportsman's show. Instead, you'll see the Lipizzans in a support role for trail riders and ranchers with Hew Hillis, a lifelong Northwest horse packer from The Dalles. The Lipizzans will also be on hand for a seminar on Trail First Aid for horses and riders with Kayley Patton, trainer at White Horse Vale Lipizzans.

At the Pack Horse Seminar, you'll learn to pack everything from steel drums for building livestock watering spots on trails, to coolers with water bottles for DNR firefighters and whole camps for hunting groups. Hillis will be joined by Sean Patton, a local Eagle Scout, a newbie to horse packing, and an experienced outdoor adventurer. Together they make a hilarious and entertaining team that will go over the basics of how to pack your horse for the trail. Hillis and Patton will demonstrate everything from packing full size hay bales, basket hitches, and diamond hitches to balancing a load on your horse. Pack Horse Seminars are free of charge and will be held Friday, April 29 at 5 p.m .; Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m .; and Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m. in the Joan Frey Arena.

At the Trail First Aid Seminar, Kayley Patton will cover horse and human first aid for the trail and what every trail rider should carry with them. Kayley will give you some interesting life hacks to make your trail pack lightweight and easy to use. She'll also share some of the best and horse-friendly riding and camping trails in the Northwest. Trail First Aid will be held Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m .; Saturday, April 30 at 3 p.m .; and Sunday, May 1 at noon.

Admission to the Goldendale Home, Garden & Sportsman's show is free to the public as are all workshops and seminars. Show hours are: Friday, April 29, noon - 7 p.m .; Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m .; and Sunday, May 1, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Call the Greater Goldendale Area Chamber of Commerce at 773-3400, or visit for more information.
