HERE TODAY, GONE IN A MONTH:The Glass Onion, Goldendale's upscale restaurant, is closing, and it's news primarily because it's a thriving business that is choosing to leave town.

The Glass Onion, Goldendale's only upscale restaurant and a draw to patrons from as far as Portland, will close on Friday , Dec. 23. The owners cite a dearth of arts and culture in and around Goldendale as a predominant reason for the closure. In an email letter to customers, Maren and Matt McGowan said, "The journey for us started as a plan to expand our business. We started the process of designing and building a food cart more than a year ago. Throughout the process, we looked at various event and location opportunities for the cart in the Gorge area. Through personal and busi

ness connections, we were introduced to the Tri-Cities area. What initially started as a business venture, quickly developed into a personal journey for our family ." The McGowans then spoke of the challenges facing their highly artistic children. "Our kids are both talented in the arts," they wrote. "Our son, Arlo, [is] a talented musician with an interest in theater , and Elsa [is] a budding artist also interested in theater . We could not ignore the plentiful opportunities in performing arts and the art world for our children in the TriCities area. We felt that it was important for our family to be in an environment where our kids could be in theater productions and

youth symphony , and the like, because this is where their passions are. That is how we came to the decision to move our family to the Tri-Cities." The plan at first had been to keep the restaurant in Goldendale open. "We have excellent staff and wanted to continue the restaurant," they wrote. "It has been a very difficult decision, but we have decided that closing our Goldendale location is truly best for our family ." The McGowans closed with a statement of appreciation for Goldendale. "We have truly appreciated your support over the years. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the community and make Goldendale our home for many years."
