GOLDENDALE ART WINNERS: Left to right: 12th grader Carla Estrada-Coronel (Regional Award winner and $2,000 CWU scholarship recipient); 11th grader Gabrielle Guthrie (ESD 105 Board Choice Award winner); 11th grader Stephanie Sullivan (ESD 105 Board Choice Award winner); 11th grader Kylee Beam ($1,000 CWU scholarship recipient); and Goldendale High School art teacher Scott Gray.

Eight pieces by high school artists from south central Washington will be advancing to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction's (OSPI) statewide Superintendent's High School Art Show, held later this spring in Olympia. The pieces were chosen as standouts among 80 entries in this year's Educational Service District (ESD) 105 Regional High School Art Show.

Goldendale High School also earned multiple honors, with four of its five entries being recognized with an award and/or scholarship. Three of the eight entries advancing to the OSPI statewide show are from Toppenish.

The 44th annual Regional High School Art Show will remain on display at JA World (650 University Parkway in Yakima) through Monday, March 20. JA World's regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Goldendale High School 12th grader Carla Estrada-Coronel was one of this year's Regional Award winners, chosen for her piece, "Inspiracion," a linoleum cut/block print. Teacher Scott Gray previously had a Goldendale student's piece qualify for the OSPI statewide show in 2014.

OSPI's statewide show will be on display from March 31 through June 2 at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia. The awards reception for the state exhibit will be held Friday, May 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. Awards of $200 cash purchases are expected to be given to 15 of the entries at the state show.

ESD 105 Board Choice Awards

In addition to the eight winners advancing to the state exhibit, two students in the ESD 105 Regional Show received the ESD 105 Board Choice Award. Each of those entries were selected to be purchased for a cash award of $250 by the ESD 105 Board of Directors to join 34 other pieces in a collection of past years' student art on permanent display at the ESD 105 Conference Center in Yakima.

This year, both of the ESD 105 Board Choice Award winners are students at Goldendale High School. Teacher Scott Gray has had his students' work selected for the ESD 105 Board Choice Award during three of the past four years (2014, 2015, and now both entries for 2017).

The 2016 ESD 105 Board Choice Award winners are Gabrielle Guthrie, 11th grade, for "Fragments of a Candle Flame" (colored charcoal on toned paper), and Stephanie Sullivan, 11th grade, for "Duplicity" (graphite drawing).

CWU Scholarship Awards

For the third year, scholarship awards to Central Washington University were presented to seven of the students in the art show. David Bieloh, associate professor of graphic design at CWU, awarded scholarships to students in recognition of their entries. Goldendale High School recipients were Carla Estrada-Coronel, for her linoleum cut/block print "Inspiracion," and 11th grader Kylee Beam, for her graphite and charcoal "Self Portrait" entry. Both are students of Scott Gray.
