Lyle school superintendent faces DUI, reckless endangerment charges

March 15, 2017

Lyle School District Superintendent Andrew Kelly was charged with driving under the influence and reckless endangerment Sunday night in White Salmon. His son, a minor, was in the vehicle with him at the time.

Bingen-White Salmon Police Chief Tracy Wyckoff says the department received several complaints of a vehicle driving erratically along Route 14. An officer observed the vehicle driving over the center line and on the sidewalk. The officer pulled the vehicle over near milepost 67 just outside Bingen and noticed the smell of alcohol while questioning the driver, Andrew Kelly, who was subsequently cited for DUI.

As mandated in DUI cases, Kelly’s vehicle was impounded. Wyckoff says there appeared to be fresh damage to the vehicle, possibly caused by a guardrail. One report also claimed Kelly had driven into someone’s yard.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source tells The Sentinel Kelly gave only a cursory explanation to teachers.

A statement from the chair of the Lyle school board is pending.
