Elder: too many people consider faith a spectator sport

PASTORAL OBSERVATIONS: Darrell Watson wants people to engage in a personal relationship with God.

Many people identify as Christian, but what does that really mean? To his chagrin, Darrell Watson thinks it may not mean much.

"What they're saying is, 'I think Christianity's a good thing, but Sunday's the football game.'"

Watson is the senior elder at Father's House Fellowship Church and president of the Goldendale Christian Fellowship (GCF), a cooperative organization that involves most of the churches in the area.

GCF conducts demographic studies-much like a census-to determine the potential size and needs of their collective flock. Based on those studies, Watson concludes, "80 percent of the people in this community don't have a living relationship with God."
