Sunset meeting scheduled

Will the sun set on the sunset clause? That’s the subject of a Klickitat Board of County Commissioners meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 16. The question before the board is whether to repeal the sunset clause of Ordinance O063015, thereby cementing a county-wide ban against the establishment of new marijuana businesses and expansion to any pre-existing ones.

On April 17, the County Planning Commission recommended the repeal by a vote of 6-2. Now the board will decide whether to accept that recommendation as is, or to request changes.

The issue has been hotly contested. Despite being closed to public comment, the April 17 meeting was interrupted by opponents and supporters of the ban.

The May 16 meeting, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the County Commissioners Meeting Room, will be open to the public but not public comment.

Should the board decide to request changes to the recommendation, the matter will be considered at further public hearings—open to public testimony.
