Don't miss the 'Fly-In'

Start your Saturday before Father’s Day, with a hearty breakfast dished up by the Dallesport Firefighters on June 17, starting at 7 a.m. then enjoys the festivities of the Dallesport Volunteer Fire Department and the Columbia Gorge Regional Airport’s 3rd “Fly-In”. This year they have a special guest attending: Colonel Dick Cole who was Jimmy Doolittle’s co-pilot during the famous Doolittle raid in World War II. Adding to that is Tom Reilly, who has restored many World War II aircraft and will be giving a presentation on his current XP-82 Twin Mustang Project. Many types of aircraft will be on display as well as helicopter rides available for the more adventurous. Don’t miss the Insitu exhibit of Model Airplanes and drones or the array of vendor booths, vintage cars, go-carts, and a bounce house; they plan to have something for every member of the family.

The DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services) offers a Washington state agency mobile office that provides opportunities for people to do paperwork and fill out forms and applications for health care, basic food, child care help, etc. It saves people from having to make the trip into Yakima or White Salmon, which can be hard if they have no transportation. The mobile office will be at the in-lieu site in Lyle on June 29th from 1-3 PM. (In-lieu refers to the native fishing site in Lyle, which would be Lyle Point). This makes it easier to sign up for the benefits, health care, and review accounts. Since 1996 their work has focused on connecting our rural communities with resources and services in order to strengthen and support resilience in families and reduce adverse childhood experiences.

The Fire House Sale in High Prairie offers an opportunity to join in with a vendor booth of your own.

This will be held at their Community Center, 701 Struck Rd off Centerville Highway. As always they will have food booth with baked goods featuring the now famous Myrin’s Bratwurst (with an option for vegetarians); as well as the raffles, silent auction, car show, and of course the giant rummage sale. This year enjoy the festivities on June 23-25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday & Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. For vendor information call: (509) 365-4429.

Congratulations to our own Lyle High School Alumnus, George Cooper, Class of 1958. He was honored on May 23 as a 2017 Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) award winner for his community leadership. Among his other achievements, George has also chaired the Lyle Alumni Reunions for many years and stayed active with the school events.
