GPS students learn to be leaders

Smiling primary school students visited the Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday to show their rock painting based on their 7 Habits studies. The rocks have short mottos and are being placed at various Goldendale locations.

Students at the Goldendale Primary School are immersed in learning the 7 habits of successful kids and how to be leaders in life. We are looking for a ways to show leadership in the Goldendale Community, and we also thought of how valuable it would be to teach our first grade students about what the Chamber of Commerce does. One idea that we had was to share some meaningful words and phrases that help us learn how (and remember) to be successful as students and citizens in the world. We painted these words and phrases on small to medium (hand-size) flat rocks or even just very small simple wooden signs and distribute them in the community; Chamber of Commerce, Presby Museum, swimming pool, public library, and other locations.

An example would be Habit 3: Put First Things First-work first, then play. A first grader might remember the more simple phrase for this, such as: Work Hard. They painted their rock and wrote the words. This helped them feel a sense of pride and also share meaningful ideas with important places in the community and feel connection and leadership.

The Chamber was so welcoming and provided students with cookies, strawberries, and a place to rest on our walking field trip while they explained about the role of the Chamber in the community. They also gave the students NASA-approved eclipse viewing glasses and explained about the big event of the solar eclipse in our area in August. We had a great experience!
