Grinders split with La Sallle, top Metro

LEADING OFF: Goldendale's Rennen Kauffman takes his lead during Friday's game against La Salle at Jackson Field.

Goldendale Grinders head coach Rick Kauffman was worried about having enough pitchers to last throughout the weekend as the Grinders were set for four games in two days this past weekend.

The Grinders played two games at home on Friday against La Salle and were supposed to take the field on Saturday for two more games with Southwest Metro, who they split a doubleheader with on June 30, but ended up being canceled.

On Friday, however, starting pitcher Justin Wells' performance on the mound had Kauffman breathing a little easier after he went five strong innings on the mound for a complete game as Goldendale knocked off La Salle 13-3 in five innings in the first of two games.

DIALED IN: Justin Wells delivers against the Lightning on Friday.

Wells was in charge and had great command through the five innings, striking out five while allowing just three hits while the Grinder defense turned a double play in the second inning and did a good job of backing him up in the field.

Playing with only nine players on Friday, Kauffman was worried the team might run out of pitchers for the two games that were supposed to be played Saturday, but after Wells went the distance in the opener, he was able to relax a little.

Pitchers who throw 36-60 pitches are required to rest for at least one day, while throwing between 61 and 90 pitches on a single occasion required two days of rest. Throwing 35 or less pitches in a game doesn't require the player to rest.

That all didn't matter since the two games set for Saturday didn't happen.

Along with Wells' strong effort on the mound, the Grinders also had a big day at the plate, ripping 11 hits in the five innings with many going for extra bases.
