Cougar Quest coming up

Cougar Quest ’17 is coming! Do you have a sixth, seventh, or eighth grader during the 2017-18 school year? The Lyle School District is inviting all middle school students to a leadership development camp July 31-Aug. 11, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. There will be no charge for students as this is funded in cooperation with a school improvement grant. Also highlight your calendar for Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the second annual National Night Out celebration. A great time was had by attendees last year. A gathering at the Lyle Community Park is set for residents of Lyle and surrounding communities to encourage partnership with neighbors, safety officials, organizations, and local businesses. Contact Rettai Bruni, Prevention/Intervention Specialist/Lyle Community School, rettai.bruni@lyleschools.org.

It seems as though our neighbors and since-childhood friends are being called home at a rapid pace. This last week it was first Fred Akita and then Ivor Jones, both childhood residents of the Lyle/Dallesport area. They were both honored for service with a military honor guard gun salute and taps. Ivor Jones’ graveside service at Lyle/Balch Cemetery was continued at the Celebration Center in Lyle, which was packed with family and friends. Fred’s graveside service was held in The Dalles and also had a very large attendance.

The Twin Bridges Museum held a book sale this past weekend and fared well but didn’t make a dent in the volumes of volumes still available. This leaves many more items left for their up-and-coming yard sale next month. Their American pride is shown in the new military exhibit and has received rave revues which seem to have inspired more visitors to dust off their own family trunks in search of family military memorabilia. It has grown weekly and represents each branch of the military with photos, uniforms and war souvenirs dating back to the Civil War. You can see for yourself each Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. now through September. Maybe, just maybe, you can talk the docent next Saturday into letting you check out the items still for sale.

If you are doing PR for a local organization and wish the public to hear about what is going on with your group, then by all means let me know. Those who contact me promptly with their news get priority. Space is limited and my deadline is Sundays, but earlier is better. Contact me at lykensme@embarqmail.com.
