Zendraw classes offered at Ekone Park

EASY ART: It's called Zenart, and Goldendale resident Marissa Hatch is teaching it this summer at Ekone Park.

During each Saturday in July, adults and children ages 11-and-up can learn how to Zendraw by a local community member.

Merissa Hatch, who graduated from Goldendale High School in 2009, is teaching the free classes, which are held at the Ekone Park gazebo from 3-4:30 p.m. The first class was held on July 8, but those who missed the first two classes are still encouraged to attend.

Hatch says that the idea of teaching a Zendrawing class came to her when people began to show an interest in her art, and commented that they could never draw like that themselves.

"They say they could never do them, but it's much easier than people think," said Hatch. "So I wanted to help people learn just how creative they can be if they let their mind wander without fear of imperfections."

Hatch was the recipient of the Ekone Creative Services 2014 Youth in Media Award, awarded by a selection committee composed of Goldendale Community Radio members. The committee was impressed by Hatch's originality, creativity, and self-directed productivity in print, audio and visual media.

According to Hatch, Zen drawing is a form of pen and ink drawing that uses repeated designs and patterns to make abstract art.

"There are many types of drawing styles, but this particular type is all about letting your mind wander and letting go of stresses," says Hatch. "If you can draw a line-straight or not-you can draw."

Hatch has been a child caregiver for more than 10 years, and published her first children's book, Kindergarten Mishaps: The Magic Teacher, in 2014. You can find more information at her website, merissawrites.weebly.com.

Those who wish to participate in the class must register via the class's Eventbrite.com page, "Beginner Zendrawing In The Park."
