Learn family and business emergency preparedness

October 18, 2017

Community Enrichment for Klickitat and Skamania Counties (CEKC) and the Skamania Klickitat Community Network are holding the first Rural Family and Business Emergency Preparedness Expo. The Expo will take place Oct. 21 in Goldendale at the Goldendale Grange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is no charge to attend.

Wildfire, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, ice storms, rockslides and more do happen here in the Gorge. The train derailment in Mosier in 2016 showed how vulnerable the area transportation system is to traffic bottlenecks and how critical the bridges are. The recent weather catastrophes in Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico, as well as the Eagle Creek Fire also show the importance of being ready to respond to natural disasters.

The Rural Family and Business Preparedness Expo will focus on five critical areas often affected by a disaster, especially in rural regions: food, water, communication, fuel, and transportation. Post-disaster scam prevention, protecting important family and business documents, coping skills to help survive traumatic stress, making a family and business emergency plan, pet and livestock care, helping elderly and disabled family members prepare, and more will be covered as well. First aid kits will be given to the first 25 families attending, and “Good to Go” emergency backpacks will be available as door prizes.

Booth space will be provided at no charge for service providers. Sponsorships are available for $25, with the proceeds going towards the purchase of supplies for the emergency kits.
