County sets new speed limits

November 15, 2017

On Nov. 7, County Commissioners approved an ordinance to reduce the speed limit on two county roads that recently were improved.

Orchard Heights Road from mile post 2.29 to mile post 4.60 will have its current speed limit of 50 mph reduced to 35 mph, and Bird Creek Road at mile post .52 to mile post .85 will also be reduced from 50 mph to 35 mph.

Orchard Heights Road is located north of Goldendale off Pipeline Road, and Bird Creek Road is located near Glenwood.

Public Works Director Gordon Kelsey presented the proposed reductions by the Public Works Department, based off the design of the roads. The roads were reconstructed to a design that is safest at a certain speed, taking into account the curves and the horizontal sections of the road.

The County Commissioners also held a public hearing to consider proposed amendments and the extension to the Klickitat County Six Year Transportation Improvement Program for 2018-2023 to prioritize what construction projects are the most important to the county in the near future.
