Dave "sparky" Sparks

November 29, 2017

David Dale Sparks, 67, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017. Dave was born Dec. 23, 1949 in North Platte, Nebraska.

Dave began a long life of taking care of his family; when in the 7th grade, he quit school to take care of his family, taking jobs, picking berries, shoveling snow, walking horses, etc.

In 1967 Dave enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Wildfleken, Germany, re-enlisted, then served in Vietnam until 1972, with honorable discharge in 1973. He served as Water Supply Specialist earning National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars.

1973 began his lifelong love of highlead logging and working in the woods. His first experience, Forks, Washington, back in the days of "One Log Loads." Those who knew Dave well remember his recount of a particular "One Log Load" and how it took him all day to get it to the landing. Dave loved running yarder, he climbed trees for rigging, he spliced wire rope, ran haywire, and cussed at the carriage when the skyline wasn't in the air. He was known to tackle any job on the landing, or in the brush, if it was holding up production. Dave was always proud to work alongside his sons and other family in the woods. Dave logged for over 27 years, many of those, working with Murray & Murray Logging, Glenwood, Washington. He was proud to call Bubs, Eddie and Marlene his friends. Also over the years, "Sparky" with family and friends, "Logged millions of board feet" while on barstools and around campfires. Happy times-cherished memories.

Above all else, Dave loved his family. He loved getting everyone together for family meals. He loved cooking and making green chili. He loved chocolate, all food, and his pets. Dave loved playing poker, shooting pool, fishing and hunting with family and friends. About hunting, he said "Once the deer is on the ground, the fun is over, now you have to hang it." Dave was a hard worker, there was always "meat in the pot."

Dave was a 19-year member of American Legion Post #116 in Goldendale. He loved his American Legion family, they always held a special place in his heart, and he was very proud to be a member of Post 116.

Dave loved the Texas Hold 'Em tournaments at the Legion and Simcoe. He always enjoyed playing cards with everyone and joking with the girls. To all the cardplayers, a heartfelt thank you.

Dave is survived by his wife Suzanne, daughter Rieda Sparks, sons Jonathen David Sparks, Bobby Jones, Jr., John Chaney, Leland Bantrager, and their families, as well as brother Jim Belt, sisters Lori Drake, Linda Davies and Debbie Nunnley and their families. Also, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and other loving family in Vancouver, La Push, Mt. Rainier, Carson, White Salmon, Bingen, Dallesprt, and Goldendale, Washington; as well as Brownsville, the Eugene area, Haines, The Dalles and Bend, Oregon; and family in California and Colorado.
