Allison Gilliam drives to the basket during last year's game against Highland on Jan. 14 in Goldendale. Gilliam, along with Sierra Plum and Aimee Bartkowski, are the three returning seniors for the Wolves this season.

Last year, Goldendale girls head coach Mike Plum implemented a new uptempo offense that is all too familiar throughout the Yakima Valley. Many of the schools in the South Central Athletic Conference have a fast paced system and it was only a matter of time until Goldendale transformed.

It took a little getting used to but now, the Timberwolves are off and running as they begin the 2017-18 hoops season.

Goldendale returns three seniors (Allison Gilliam, Aimee Bartkowski, and Sierra Plum) who have been in the program for three years who also have served as mentors for some of the younger girls new to the system.

"The girls that have been with me for three years have taken off," Plum said. "They were running right away. I didn't have to teach a whole lot. They already know it. That's been really huge for us.

"We have some really great senior leadership with Allison, Aimee, and Sierra kind of taking the younger girls under their wings and really getting things done," he added.

Now in her senior year, Gilliam is an ideal floor general for the Wolves. She was able to get many easy scoring opportunities at the basket last year out of their fast-paced offense, and should again be a tough matchup for opposing defenses this season.

Plum is an all-around, well balanced player and Bartkowski was one of the team's top threats from beyond the arc last season.

Sophomore Kristin Bighorn is a tough and energetic body underneath the basket who could be a dominant rebounder and dominant player, with sophomores Delaney Peters and Ashley Bartkowski also providing help down low.

Junior Kelli Bighorn returns a much improved basketball player from the year earlier, and Tiana Watson is a speedy freshman who can run all day. Both players will provide a boost to the team's backcourt.

Aimee Bartkowski goes up for a shot during last year's senior night game against Granger. Bartkowski, Sierra Plum, and Allison Gilliam are the three returning seniors for the Timberwolves.

Goldendale is on the road today for the Klickitat Jamboree. The jamboree starts at 5 p.m. in Klickitat and features the Klickwood (Klickitat and Glenwood) Vandals as well as the Lyle-Wishram Cougars. Each team will play each other once in a short 10 minute game.

The Timberwolves open the regular season with a rematch of last year's first game. The Timberwolves host old SCAC West rival Mabton on Saturday at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Vikings won last year's contest 62-33 in Mabton.

The Timberwolves then are in action on the road against Stevenson next Tuesday, tipping off against the Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Goldendale won last year's meeting 66-35 in Goldendale.
