Cougars boys beat Klickitat-Glenwood, fall short against Australia travel team

December 13, 2017

The Lyle-Wishram Cougars are off to a hot start this season with three straight wins including last Tuesday’s Greater Columbia Gorge League victory over Klickitat Glenwood.

The Cougars also played at home last Thursday against the Sydney Giants, an Australian traveling hoops team and fell in a 68-67 nail biter.

The Cougars led by two late in the game, but a technical free throw by the Giants cut it to 67-66 Cougars. With one last possession and limited time on the clock, the Giants were able to convert a layin as time expired for the one-point win.

The Cougars were away from the court until Tuesday when they matched up for the second time this season with the Columbia High Bruins. But results weren’t available by the time the papers were sent.

Lyle-Wishram knocked off the Bruins 68-49 in its season-opening contest on Dec. 1 in Lyle.

A week earlier, the Cougars knocked off the Klickitat-Glenwood Vandals to start 1-0 in GCGL play. Although the Cougars are a Class 2B school, they compete in the Class 1B GCGL due to the proximity of the school and the rest of the league.

Lyle-Wishram outscored the Vandals in each quarter of the 53-37 win over the shorthanded squad.

The Vandals have been without senior guard Easton Atchley, who was injured in the opening game this season. A big time scorer and one of the top players in the conference, Atchley will be missed until he returns to the court.

The Cougs had balanced scoring all the way around in the win, and used their defense to generate offense at times.

“Our guys played very unselfishly on offense and in transition which gave everyone opportunities to score in both the half court and after steals from the press,” head coach Josh Padgett said in an email.
